| NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION PRESIDENT
Emily Corn Champion What a joy it has been to meet so many of you at district meetings, chapter meetings, commemorative events and special occasions throughout the state this year. Your many kindnesses extended to me and your North Carolina Division officers have been greatly appreciated. We have shared joys and sorrows-triumphs and disappointments but through it all, we have been able to count on the tremendous support of our North Carolina daughters. What an inspiration you have been. Thank you. Currently the North Carolina Division UDC has fifty-five active chapters. Sadly James B. Kenan Chapter 538-Warsaw disbanded effective December 31, 2008 after celebrating their 107th Anniversary and the Chalmers Glenn Chapter 1129-Eden disbanded effective April 30, 2009 after celebrating their 101 Anniversary. I would like to thank all the chapter presidents for submitting their annual chapter reports, rating sheets and incoming officer reports. I see that all of you have been busy this year fulfilling the objectives of the UDC. It has been a great pleasure for me to read about the innovative ways our members find to serve the UDC and their local communities. If you have not submitted a report for your chapter, it is not too late. Our eight District Meetings were well attended this year. Division Vice President Leanne Moore did an excellent job coordinating the dates and locations with each District Director. Chapters both large and small stepped up to the plate to serve as hostess chapters, once again, attesting to the talents and ingenuity of our North Carolina daughters. You are incredible. I was very pleased to see so many of you attend the Spring Board Meeting in Richmond March 14th where you had the opportunity to meet our General Officers and Committee Chairmen and avail yourselves of the opportunity to attend General Officer workshops. These are always informative and prepare us to do our jobs at the division and chapter levels. I hope you returned to your chapters with renewed enthusiasm and lots of information to share with members who were unable to attend Spring Board. The North Carolina Division had an impressive number of daughters (14) attend Massing of the Flags June 6th in Richmond where I was privileged to present the NC State Flag and the Confederate Memorial Service June 7th at Arlington National Cemetery where I placed a memorial wreath on behalf of the NC Division UDC. Twelve NC daughters attended the ceremony and had the rare opportunity to have lunch on the portico of Arlington House, the home of our great General Robert E. Lee. It is always a treat to attend the Children of the Confederacy Conventions and this year was no exception. Congratulations Charles F. Fisher Chapter 73 CofC and their sponsoring UDC Chapter, Robert F. Hoke 78-Salisbury hosts for the NC Division CofC Convention March 27th & 28th. It was my pleasure to bring greetings from the NC Division UDC. We were honored to have President General Jane Durden UDC bring greetings from General, and Mr. Justin Harris, Vice President General CofC of Augusta, SC bring greetings. Although it rained most of the day, spirits could not be dampened. A highlight of the convention was a trolley tour of historic Salisbury conducted by Robert F. Hoke President Sue Curtis and her husband, Edison. The tour concluded at the magnificent mid-19th century era Hall House where we were greeted by Grady Hall portraying Dr. Josephus Hall, a surgeon at the Salisbury Civil War Prison Hospital. Miss Victoria Anne Hughes, President NC Division CofC and Mrs. Michele Miller Director NC Division CofC are to be commended for an outstanding convention. As usual, North Carolina Division CofC had a sizable delegation attend the 55th Annual Children of the Confederacy General Convention July 16-18 at the DoubleTree Hotel and Convention Center at the entrance of Universal Studios-Orlando, FL. Our children did us proud. Many participated as pages and aides throughout the convention; President Victoria Anne Hughes delivered an excellent annual report during Presidents’ evening and presented the NC Flag accompanied by in-coming NC Division CofC President Richard Council during Historic Evening. Among the awards, many NC chapters received Superior and Honor classifications and our North Carolina Division Director, Michele Miller was awarded Outstanding Division Director. Time has passed so quickly, it is hard to believe that one full year has gone by and our Annual NC Division Convention is fast approaching. The 113th Annual North Carolina Division Convention is scheduled for October 7th through the 10th at the DoubleTree Hotel and Convention Center- 1965 Cedar Creek Rd, Fayetteville, NC 28312 Phone 910-323-8282. District Director, Frances “Fran” Kelly and members of District V have been busy planning a memorable convention. I look forward to seeing all of you at Convention. Please come and hear about all the wonderful programs, events, and activities our chapters have been involved with throughout the year and share the excitement as accolades and awards are presented for outstanding accomplishments. And just as important if not more so, attend and participate in the decision making process for our division. Your input is vital to the health and well being of our organization. Remember, this is a bylaws year for our division and decisions will be made that will affect how we do business at the chapter level as well as the division level. Be mindful of the Convention Deadlines: September 16 for Hotel Reservations at the Convention rate, Credentials and Meal Reservations. Refer to the Official Convention Call sent to chapters and posted on our NC Division Website, www.ncudc.org for details. Following the conclusion of our Division Convention Saturday, October 10th, join us the following day-Sunday, October 11 2:00 PM at the NC Division UDC Weldon Confederate Cemetery, First Street, Weldon, NC for the unveiling and dedication of our beautiful memorial marker honoring the one hundred and sixty-four soldiers buried at the cemetery. This event is the culmination of efforts of several years and several administrations to reclaim and bring honor and dignity to the final resting place for these Confederate sons who sacrificed their all to defend our Southland. I am so proud of the response to the Division’s “Adopt a Soldier” project at the Weldon Cemetery. Without your support of this most worthwhile endeavor, this event would not have been possible. Close on the heels our Division Convention is the UDC General Convention November 5-10 at the beautiful Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, MS. I hope many of you plan to attend. Remember this is a bylaws year and important decisions will be made at Convention. Reservations for the Beau Rivage at convention rates may be made through October 4, 2009. Convention registration, meal tickets and event tickets are due by October 15th. Convention information and forms have been mailed to chapter president, are printed n the August issue of the UDC Magazine or can also be downloaded from the UDC General Website www.hqudc.org. We have yet another opportunity to honor our NC Confederate soldiers this year. The North Carolina Division UDC plans to unveil a memorial marker November 11, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Tullahoma Confederate Cemetery –Tullahoma, TN to honor the memory and service of forty-five North Carolina Confederate soldiers buried at the cemetery. The soldiers are from Henderson, Buncombe, Madison and Polk Counties, NC. The cemetery is the resting place for 450 Confederate soldiers. Those of you traveling from the UDC General Convention in Biloxi, MS can detour by Tullahoma, which is located near Chattanooga and approximately one-hour drive from Nashville. If you do not plan to attend the convention, and would like to attend the ceremony, please join us that day for the unveiling and dedication of the memorial marker. Let me know if you plan to attend the ceremony by October 26. This would help us finalize our plans for the ceremony before we leave for General Convention. You can contact me at 919-575-6921 or echamp@aol.com. The Kirby-Smith Chapter 32 UDC, SCV Camp 72, TN Division UDC & SCV are helping us co-ordinate the program for the ceremony.
