Apr 11-13, 2008 -- 11th Annual Salisbury Confederate Prison Symposium sponsored by the Robert F. Hoke Chapter No. 78, United Daughters of the Confederacy. "Reunion of Descendants and Friends" and "Banquet with Lecture" on Friday will begin at 5 PM at Landmark Church Fellowship Hall. Dr. Dane Hartgrove will speak on the 1908 dedication of the Maine Monument at the Salisbury National Cemetery at which local Confederate veterans marched with former Maine POWs to the Memorial Service. There are six scheduled speakers at Catawba College on Saturday. Professor and author Dr. Gary Freeze will give an introduction to the Prison. Postal cover expert and author Galen Harrison will talk about correspondence to and from prisoners at Salisbury and other prisons. Descendant and nationally known speaker Mike Losey of Virginia will close the morning session sharing about his POW ancestor's escape from the Prison and from the steamer General Lyon which sank off of the North Carolina coast. In addition, author Darl Stephenson will participate in a presentation covering the supposed oath taken by Losey's ancestor. Saturday afternoon begins with a talk by Dr. Charles Cooke, M.D. of Virginia. His after lunch subject will be on gangrene and frostbite. Bill Weidner of Pennsylvania will provide information on the 1864 battle at Weldon Railroad and the soldiers of the 190th and 191st Pennsylvania that were captured and sent to Salisbury. The last presentation of the day will be readings directed by descendant Annette Ford of Florida that will feature testimony from her book on the 1866 court-marital in Raleigh of Prison Commandant John H. Gee. The two memorial services on Sunday morning at the Old Lutheran Cemetery and the Salisbury National Cemetery are open to the public. Registration for the award-winning Symposium is only $65 when postmarked by March 20 and $75 afterwards. $15 charge for refunds after March 27. No refunds after April 3.
