| Asheville Chapter #104
Asheville Asheville Chapter #104 tried a new approach to building membership in 2007. We created a small group of young ladies, ages 14 and up, that we invited to become provisional members of our chapter. Our premise was that we needed to widen our base membership by including younger women. But we knew we needed to attract them before they left home for college. We began by issuing formal invitations to an elegant, informational tea. The initial group consisted of 8 young ladies, some mothers, and even one Dad! Guests were greeted by our Division Vice President, Aileen Ezell, and Asheville Chapter President Kathy Williams at the home of sponsor Elizabeth Graham Pulliam. During the tea, the history and objectives of the society were explained by chapter officers Lori Cook Folger, Donna Alessi, and Jean Ann Rushton with additional help from Mary Matherly and Susan Wachter. The girls were also told about our chapter's various projects, UDC membership requirements, scholarships, and student loans. Each prospective member received a booklet of information, a corsage, and membership worksheet. During the rest of 2007, 4 meetings were held on Sunday afternoons, where members were able to learn more about UDC, our work with the VA, active duty personnel, & historic preservation,. Young ladies have attended commemorative events and re-enactments. The result of our efforts has been that as the young ladies are turning 16, we have received applications from 4 girls and 1 mother! We have another girl working on her papers. This has been a fun project that has not only helped increase membership, but also widened our exposure as an organization in the community. We now have more junior members who can participate as pages and as ambassadors for our chapter. The committee members have bonded into an enthusiastic group of UDC "cheerleaders" and we have enjoyed getting to know these young ladies and share our love of UDC! The chapter is actively looking for other young ladies to add to this program, which is being met with great enthusiasm in the area. |
