Convention News
The meeting was called to order at 3:45 p.m. in the Doubletree Inn in Fayetteville on
October 8, 2009 by President Teresa Langley.  Thirty five members attended.  Elmar
Holmes, vice-president, gave the invocation.  The minutes of the October 2, 2008
meeting were read and accepted.  Caroline Odom, treasurer, gave the financial report.
Caroline Odom, Membership chairman, reported that the Great-great granddaughtersâ
€™ Club had 8 new members, 143 paid members, 4 reinstated members, 14
dropped members for a total of 155 members.  Vice-President, Elmar Holmes, stated
that 7 Club pins have been sold this year.  Since 1998 members have purchased 234
pins.  There was no response to the essay contest this year.

Old business: There was no old business.

New business: The president read a letter from Joanne Sharp, president of Guilford
Chapter 301 in Greensboro asking that the money the club had sent last year to repair
the Confederate soldier statue at Green Hill Cemetery be used for a foundation.  The
letter explained that the Sons of the Confederacy had repaired the statue.  The
Guilford Chapter 301 is planning to build a foundation for the statue that will protect
the statue and allow mobility-impaired persons to access the statue. Karen Powers
made a motion that the money be used for the foundation and that an additional
money be sent to Guilford Chapter 301 for the foundation fund.  Kathy Brewer
seconded the motion.  The motion carried.
The president announced that no one submitted by-laws revision requests.  There
were no announcements.
A motion was made by Brenda Birmelin to send money to Ft. Anderson for their gun
emplacement project.  Martha Watson seconded the motion.  The motion carried.
Patsy Whitfield made a motion that money plus matching funds from Bill Bond be
sent to the Page Fund.  Melanie Perryman seconded the motion.  The motion carried.
Melanie Perryman made a motion that money be sent to the House Maintenance
Fund.  Caroline Odom seconded the motion.  The motion carried.
Elmar Holmes reported that a statue of General Joseph E. Johnston is being erected
adjacent to the Bentonville Battleground.  The statue is located on private property.  
It will be unveiled on March 20.  Ann Nowlan made a motion that we send money to
the Smithfield Light Infantry Camp SCV who are erecting the statue.  The motion
was duly seconded and carried.
There being no further business, President Langley adjourned the meeting at 5:10 p.
m.

Essays are due May 15, 2010 and should be mailed to Elmar Holmes, VP GGGD
Club, 193 Egypt Church Road, Louisburg, NC  27549.  Awards will be mailed in
July 2010.
