Convention News
Trudy Hall, President, called the meeting to order on October 5, 2007, in Rocky Mount, NC. Twenty-four members attended. A prayer was given by Elmar Holmes. Minutes were read by Brenda Birmelin, Secretary and accepted.     Caroline Odom, Treasurer, presented the financial report. The treasurer also gave a membership report stating that we have 11 new members, 138 paid members, 3 members reinstated, 17 members dropped, 1 member deceased for a total of 152 members.

Committee reports: Elmar Holmes, Vice-president, reported that five Great-Great Granddaughter pins have been purchased this past year. Since 1998, 2003 [103] pins have been purchased. We had two responses to the essay for grades 4-6 titled General Robert E. Lee. Miss Sarah Leigh Armstrong of Lincoln, Nebraska, won first place.

Old business: Brenda Birmelin reported that General Whiting’s uniform was appraised for restoration by a consultant who charged $2000. That amount was raised, but now the Cape Fear Museum is trying to raise $13,000 to pay for the restoration.

New business: The president recommended donations for several funds. She suggested money be sent to the Page Fund in memory of the late Great-Great Granddaughter, Heidi Boothe.  She also recommended that money be sent to the Bennett Place Support Fund. For that amount, we will be a Contributor as Major with permanent recognition on a plaque at the site.  She further suggested that money be given for restoration of General W.H.C. Whiting’s uniform and to the Bethel Heroes for their efforts to restore the Confederate monument in Rocky Mount.

Greetings from Trudy
Dear Great, Great Granddaughters,

Hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas season and the New Year has begun well for all.  Once again our club should be proud of the generosity of its members with the donations approved at our October meeting.  We made donations to the NC Division Page Fund, Bennett Place Support Fund, the restoration of General Whiting’s uniform at the Cape Fear Museum and the Bethel Heroes Monument Restoration Project.
Once again a special thanks goes to Mr. Bill Bond for the matching funds to the Page Fund in memory of Heidi Boothe.

I urge you to get the Great, Great Granddaughters Essay Contest topics into your local schools.  The students and teachers are very busy at this time of year getting ready for end of grade testing, so don’t waste a minute contacting local teachers and schools in your area.  Elmar Holmes does a fantastic job with this project and she loves to receive essays.

We lost one Great, Great Granddaughter last year, Mrs. Karen D’Auvray from the Guildford Chapter 301 in Greensboro, NC.  Please make sure you notify the Division Chaplain of deaths in your chapter and let her know if they belonged to any of the granddaughters clubs.

Continue to encourage new UDC members to join the Great, Great Granddaughters Club.  Forms may be found on the NCUDC website.  I am looking forward to seeing you in the fall at our meeting!
